What Is California Prop 65?
California’s Proposition 65, officially known as theSafe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act, requires the state to publish a list of chemicals that are known to cause cancer, birth defects, or reproductive harm. If a product contains even trace amounts of any listed substance above California’s specific threshold—known as “Safe Harbor Levels”—a warning label is legally required before sale to California residents.
You’ll see these warnings posted throughout California—in places like restaurants, grocery stores, schools, amusement parks, and on a wide range of consumer products, including supplements.
Why Do Some Like A Pro Products Include This Warning?
Like A Pro Supplements may include a Proposition 65 warning if any naturally occurring element (such aslead, arsenic, cadmium, or mercury) exceeds California’s extremely stringent limits—even if these amounts fall wellbelow federal or international safety standards.
These elements can naturally occur in soil and water, which means thatplant-based ingredients or mineral-rich extracts used in supplements may contain trace amounts. While these levels are considered safe by theFDA, WHO, and U.S. Pharmacopeia, California requires a warning if they exceed 1/1000th of their own Safe Harbor guidelines.
